Sawyer’s spacing wedges are used to create the exact weld gap needed for proper penetration and weld quality. Simply mount and tighten a Sawyer clamp or other compatible pipe fit-up tool at the joint, then insert the spacing tool between the pipe ends to spread the gap to the required width. This ensures a clean, uniform root opening that sets your weld up for success.
Unlike conventional spacing tools that often bend, mushroom, or shatter under pressure, Sawyer’s tools are engineered for durability. Traditional wedges are typically made from hardened spring steel, but Sawyer takes it a step further—using a refined hardening process that produces a tool that is both harder and more resilient. This significantly reduces the risk of chipping, breaking, or distortion, helping maintain precision even in tough, high-pressure conditions.
The standard Spacing Tool (Model 420) features a long, tapered blade and a maximum thickness of ¼”, making it ideal for general use on larger pipe. The Short Spacing Tool (Model 420-S) offers a compact profile with a maximum thickness of 3/16”, perfect for tighter fit-ups or smaller diameter pipe. Both versions feature a gradual taper that ends in a smooth, chiseled point—allowing for easy insertion without damaging pipe edges or coatings.
